British, London-based Andrew Chaplin, or Chappers to most, is a BAFTA winning director known for performance-led comedy that lands the laugh and the lump in the throat in the same scene. His work is character-first and shaped by a strong instinct for world-building... heightened and colourful one moment, underplayed and authentic the next.
Chaplin most recently directed LEONARD AND HUNGRY PAUL, the BBC's six-part adaptation of the cult novel, narrated by Julia Roberts. His work on the multi-BAFTA-winning ALMA'S NOT NORMAL for the BBC won him an RTS award for Best Director, and it's one of the most critically praised British sitcoms of recent years. His other work includes SMOGGIE QUEENS for BBC Three, an award-winning comedy about a chosen family of drag queens in Middlesbrough and the critically acclaimed GAMEFACE for Channel 4 and Hulu. In 2022 he was lead director on THE FULL MONTY for Disney+, an eight-part series that reunited the cast from the beloved '90s film.
Alongside the TV work, Chaplin directs commercials and branded content for clients including Volkswagen, Cushelle, Carte D'Or, Candy Crush, Carphone Warehouse, Match of the Day and Beechams, among others. The same instinct for casting and comic timing, just compressed into thirty seconds.
He started out in short-form, directing FIERY HAWK with Cardinal Burns which was a breakout viral hit, and is still talked about as one of the most painfully accurate depictions of the audition room ever committed to film.
He lives in London, gets told he looks like Jack Whitehall more often than he'd like, and has concluded he must just have one of those faces.
