Andrew — Chappers to most — has spent fifteen years directing comedy, and the last decade learning that the funniest things are usually the ones that also break your heart a bit.
He's best known for stories that earn the laugh and the lump in the throat in the same scene. Performance-led, character-first, and unafraid of the quiet moments where nobody's saying anything funny at all.
Most recently he directed LEONARD AND HUNGRY PAUL, the BBC’s six-part adaptation of the cult novel, narrated by Julia Roberts. Before that, SMOGGIE QUEENS for BBC Three, an award-winning comedy about a chosen family of drag queens in Middlesbrough - caustic, camp and full of heart . His other work includes the multi-BAFTA-winning ALMA’S NOT NORMAL for the BBC and the critically acclaimed GAMEFACE for Channel 4 and Hulu. In 2022 he was lead director on THE FULL MONTY for Disney+, an eight-part series that found the real ache underneath the beloved 90s film; the redundancies, the bodies, the blokes trying to hold it together.
He started out in short-form, including FIERY HAWK, a breakout viral hit still talked about all these years later as one of the most painfully accurate depictions of the audition room ever committed to film.
Alongside the narrative work he shoots commercials — Volkswagen, Carte D'Or and Beechams among them., where the comic timing has to earn its keep in thirty seconds flat.
He lives in London, regularly gets told he looks like Jack Whitehall, and hates frankfurters.
